Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth secured the Republican nomination for governor on Tuesday, defeating Trump-endorsed MyPillow founder Mike Lindell by an 11-percentage-point margin in a race that divided the state GOP.

Demuth captured 43.6% of the vote to Lindell's 32.5%, according to the Associated Press, becoming the first Republican woman ever nominated for governor in Minnesota. The victory sets up a November showdown against incumbent Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar, who is seeking the governorship after decades in the Senate.

The primary exposed deep fissures within Minnesota's Republican Party. Lindell had secured the state party's endorsement at the GOP convention in May after multiple rounds of voting, but Demuth refused to withdraw from the race, choosing instead to challenge the party establishment in the August primary.

Trump's Endorsement Falls Short

President Donald Trump enthusiastically backed Lindell throughout the campaign, calling him a "loyal patriot" and appearing at multiple rallies across Minnesota. The former pillow salesman has been one of Trump's most vocal supporters on election integrity issues and spent millions promoting claims of fraud in the 2020 election.

Despite Trump's support, Demuth's more traditional Republican credentials proved decisive with primary voters. As House Speaker, she led efforts to block Democratic Governor Tim Walz's progressive agenda and championed conservative policies on education, taxes, and law enforcement.

"Minnesotans want results, not just rhetoric," Demuth told supporters at her victory rally in Cold Spring. "We need a governor who can work across the aisle when necessary but will stand firm on conservative principles."

Lindell Refuses to Concede

In a development that surprised few observers, Lindell refused to concede defeat despite the double-digit margin. Speaking to reporters Wednesday morning, the businessman claimed "irregularities" in the vote count and promised to investigate.

"This isn't over," Lindell said. "We're going to make sure every legal vote was counted properly. The people of Minnesota deserve the truth."

Republican Party officials have urged Lindell to accept the results and unite behind Demuth for the November election. With Democrats holding strong advantages in Minnesota's Twin Cities metro area, Republicans will need a unified front to have any chance of capturing the governor's mansion.

Uphill Battle Ahead

Demuth faces long odds in November. Minnesota has not elected a Republican governor since Tim Pawlenty in 2006, and Klobuchar remains one of the state's most popular political figures. Recent polling shows the Senator with a 14-point lead in a hypothetical matchup.

Conservative strategists argue that Demuth's victory over Lindell may actually improve Republican chances by presenting a more electable candidate to suburban and independent voters who have fled the party in recent cycles. Her ability to win despite Trump's opposition could signal an appetite for traditional conservatism in the upper Midwest.

The Minnesota race will serve as a key test of whether Republicans can rebuild their coalition in blue-leaning states ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
