Democrats Gain Midterm Edge as Trump Drags Down Republican Campaigns
Democrats open 7.4-point lead on generic ballot as Trump's 37.1% approval rating weighs on GOP candidates nationwide with three weeks until Election Day.
With three weeks until Election Day, Democrats have opened a 7.4-point lead on the generic congressional ballot as President Trump's low approval ratings increasingly weigh on Republican candidates nationwide.
According to the latest US Polling Data, Democrats now lead 49.3% to 41.9% on the generic ballot, while Trump's approval rating has fallen to just 37.1%. The shift represents a dramatic reversal from earlier expectations that Republicans would cruise to victory given the favorable Senate map.
"They both see the midterms as being about President Trump, albeit for different reasons," CBS News reported in its Battleground Tracker poll. "Mr. Trump is so much on voters' minds" that the election has become effectively a referendum on his presidency.
Democrats need to gain four Senate seats to retake the majority they lost in 2024, while Republicans currently hold only a narrow House majority. CBS News has identified 10 key Senate races and 42 House contests that will likely decide control of both chambers.
The Guardian noted that "the situation for Democrats appears to be similarly positive in their campaign to retake the House, which Republicans control only narrowly." Political analysts suggest Trump's economic agenda and foreign policy tensions have reshaped what was supposed to be a Republican-favoring battleground map.
However, Democrats face challenges beyond November. CNN warned that if they win, they "will face a harsh reality" in having to deliver on economic relief promises to American voters struggling with affordability issues.
