China Deploys Surveillance Drones During U.S.-Japan Military Exercises Near Taiwan

The Chinese People's Liberation Army has deployed reconnaissance drones and naval vessels around Japan as American and Japanese forces conduct their largest joint military exercises in years, heightening tensions in the Western Pacific.

China launched TB-001 multirole long-range drones and intelligence-gathering aircraft to monitor Keen Sword 27, the massive U.S.-Japan war games that began October 19 and will continue through October 29, according to Military Watch Magazine. The exercises involve approximately 45,000 Japanese personnel, 12,000 American troops, 40 ships, and 260 aircraft—a significant increase from previous iterations.

The South China Morning Post reported that the expanded scale of Keen Sword 27 "could complicate PLA planning over Taiwan," as the exercises include operations near Yonaguni Island, Japan's westernmost inhabited territory located just 68 miles from Taiwan. U.S. Marines have deployed the Navy-Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System (NMESIS) to the island for the first time, with a striking range of approximately 115 miles—enough to target vessels patrolling Taiwan's eastern coast.

According to the Japan Ministry of Defense's Okinawa Defense Bureau, U.S. and Japanese forces established a joint coordination center at the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force garrison on Yonaguni on October 2. The facility enables real-time intelligence sharing and coordinated responses in the event of a Taiwan Strait contingency.

Chinese state media outlet Global Times dismissed concerns about the PLA's surveillance operations, with one expert calling recent Japanese reports on Chinese military activity "exaggerated." However, the deployment of reconnaissance assets during Keen Sword 27 marks an escalation in China's monitoring of joint U.S.-Japan operations near contested waters.

The exercises come amid growing concerns about a potential Taiwan conflict, with both Washington and Tokyo strengthening defense cooperation in response to Beijing's increasingly assertive posture in the Indo-Pacific region. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve reunification.

Military analysts note that while the PLA's surveillance efforts are standard practice during major foreign military exercises, the proximity to Taiwan and the deployment of advanced reconnaissance platforms like the TB-001 drone underscore the strategic sensitivity of operations in the region. The Keen Sword exercises are conducted biennially but have grown substantially in size and scope in recent years.
